Bose Wearables & Portable

Context

PROJECTS

Integrating software and hardware design for all products in our on-the-go lines. These Bose lines include the majority of Bluetooth™ capable products from headphones & earbuds to portable speakers.

ROLE

Senior UX Designer —
Platform-wide experience design for firmware and systems software spanning portable and wearable audio devices, with special focus on cross-device connectivity to personal devices. Co-led development of internal tools for mapping requirements as well as documenting, testing, and deploying designs.

IMPACT

  • Outstanding design consistency across product lines.

  • Modernized wired and wireless connectivity experiences.

  • Leaner and far more efficient processes within cross-functional collaboration with developers and SQA engineers.

TIMELINE

2022-2026

RELEVANT PRODUCTS

Experiential
Feedback

Consider an LED component. Visual feedback language should be clear, simple and consistent across platforms.

Consistent
Experience

Audio products of different types will often benefit from integrating similar feedback.

Intentional Diversions

An LED might behave in a different way if needed. Product form factor and intended use will vary, and design should match accordingly.

Complex Systems

Complex Systems

Bluetooth™ and Wired Connectivity

I determined connectivity logic for stream handling across wired and wireless experiences. Products capable of multi-wireless and wired connections need active stream prioritization, incoming stream context hierarchy, drop cues, and elegant handling of stream interruption.

The biggest challenge is to compete with operating system ecosystems that have communicating chip architecture and can intelligently switch streams and hand off audio.

I created and iterated on multi-point streaming behavior that accounted for content, call prioritization, and switching between BT and USB with respect to our prioritization logic. This was a complex experience that involved years of refinement.

Bluetooth™
Multi-point

Wireless connections are the most common type across our on-the-go product lines, with Bose Qualcomm chips being able to be actively connected to 2 products at once.

USB-C
Audio

USB-C has become the ubiquitous wired audio path across the consumer electronics industry. Bose has implemented two-way USB Audio in its product line.

Design Documentation

We created requirements that are ready to implement and directly tied into the same Atlassian platform as our ticket system (JIRA & Confluence). The requirements are built into tables that make up a UIDD (User Interaction Design Document) that can be easily linked, embed and dropped anywhere across Atlassian. This keeps a single source of truth for all viewers and prevents redundancies.

UIDD Table

Click on a column or expand the full table to learn more about the structure.

These scenarios are example only and are not accurate representations of how any Bose products work. That documentation is confidential.

Rules for Documenting

Scenarios are built with specific guidance, all of which I came up with alongside my team as co-lead for this internal tool building

Multidisciplinary

Thanks to my experience at Bose, I'm capable as an individual design contributor and have skills that can extend to product management. I'm comfortable in conversations about scope that include budget, marketing vendors, and engineering.
